Last fall I had the opportunity to take part in a creative place making event called PARK(ing) day. The goal of this annual worldwide event is to have artists, designers and citizens transform metered urban parking spots into temporary public spaces.
I hosted a popup open air studio on F street in downtown Anchorage between 4th and 5th Avenue and invited passerbys to share their Alaska Story. My motivation for the location came from wanting to make use of the refracting natural light which is absolulety gorgeous and needs to captialized on more often.
My prompt for the Alaska Story was roughly asking people to tell me how they got to Alaska, what convinced them to stay or when it was that they knew they had to return. As a first generation immigrant from Latin America, I know that growing up in the north has radically defined my bi-ethnic identity.
I'm looking forward to connecting with other Alaskans and continue exploring how it is that we form our identities. Park(ing) day is on Friday September 16th this year.
